West Ham reached their first European final since 1976 after Thursday’s 1-0 victory at AZ Alkmaar, with an aggregate of 3-1.

The Hammers last reached a major European final 47 years ago when they lost against Anderlecht in the Cup Winners Cup. In 2006, they lost the Steven Gerrard FA Cup final on penalties after a 3-3 draw against Liverpool.

Pablo Fornals scored West Ham’s winning goal to seal a 1-0 victory in the second leg to set up a clash with Fiorentina in the final in Prague on June 7. Last season, West Ham lost 3-1 on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-finals.

This season, West Ham have won 13 of their 14 games in the competition, staying 15th on the table.

However, the celebration for the Hammers were soon cut short as supporters broke through a fence and attacked the West Ham contingent seated in a reserved section at the AZ Stadium. A fight ensued between supporters, prompting ugly scenes until the police and stewards arrived to prevent further violence.

Calm was restored in the stadium 10 minutes later.
