Justinus Soni “Justin” Fashanu (1961-1998) was a British footballer who is notable for being the first professional footballer in the UK to come out as gay. He was born on February 19, 1961, in Hackney, London, England.
Fashanu began his professional football career with Norwich City in 1979 and gained recognition for his exceptional athleticism and goal-scoring ability. His most famous goal came in 1980 when he scored a spectacular volley against Liverpool, which was later voted “Goal of the Season.”
He was one of the first footballers to command a £1 million transfer fee, with his transfer from Norwich City to Nottingham Forest in 1981, and had varying levels of success as a player afterwards, until he retired in 1997.
Despite his success on the field, Fashanu faced significant challenges off the pitch due to his sexuality. In 1990, he publicly revealed his homosexuality, becoming the first prominent British footballer to do so. This revelation led to both support and backlash from the football community and the public.
Unfortunately, Fashanu’s life took a tragic turn. He faced accusations of sexual assault in the United States, and although he vehemently denied the charges, the pressure and stigma surrounding his sexuality took a toll on his mental health. On May 2, 1998, at the age of 37, Justin Fashanu died by suicide in London.
The suicide note he left behind stated that he feared he will not get a fair trial because of his homosexuality. He wrote that the sex was consensual. In 2020, Fashanu was inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame.
Fashanu’s legacy is complex. He made significant strides in challenging homophobia in football by being open about his sexuality, but he also experienced prejudice and adversity.
