Nigeria’s U-20 side, the Flying Eagles was defeated by Brazil in their last group game at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in La Plata on Saturday night.
The Flying Eagles reached the round of 16 of the tournament as the best third-place team in the Group stages with six points. Brazil therefore took over the first position in Group D, with Nigeria in third-place.
The Flying Eagles held their South American opponents for the first 40 minutes, but Brazil took the lead in the 43rd minute through Jean Pedroso. The Brazilians soon became in total control of the game, and scored 2-0 thanks Pedroso and Marquinhos.
In the other Group D game, Italy defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0, moving the Italians into second place ahead of Nigeria.
The Flying Eagles could be facing either Argentina or USA for a place in the quarter-finals. They will know their Round 16 opponent when the group stage matches are concluded on Sunday.
