The death of a man in the Southeast Calgary community of Forest Lawn over the weekend that was first deemed suspicious has now been ruled a homicide.
According to Calgary Police Service (CPS), around 4:15pm, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, officers were called to the 2200 block of 42 Street S.E., for reports that a seriously-injured man had been discovered in an alley.
Police says EMS arrived and confirmed the man to be deceased.
Following an autopsy on Wednesday, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim was identified as 24-year-old Abdoul Madiou Balde. His death was deemed a homicide.
“Investigators have canvassed the surrounding area and spoken to nearby residents, however we are still asking witnesses to come forward”, said the Police statement. “In cases like this one, the answers lie within the community, and we are asking anyone with information about this incident, even if the information seems insignificant, to contact police.”
Staff Sergeant Mark Rahn of the CPS Homicide Unit says, “The public plays a crucial role in helping us solve these investigations. Regardless of if you believe your information isn’t valuable or assume that police already have it, we want you to come forward.”
“Sometimes even the smallest tip can be the piece that solves the puzzle”, added Staff Sergeant Rahn.
Police says this is Calgary’s ninth homicide of 2024.
Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards of up to $2,000 for information that helps law enforcement solve crimes.
