Calgary Police have issued a public warning after a series of break and enters targeting homes in new communities.
In a news release, the police said there is an influx of break and enters occurring with new home and homes under construction across Calgary, precisely within the southeast community of Belvedere.
Items such as appliances, electrical boxes, siding, windows, doors and various other construction materials are most often stolen.
“We encourage new homeowners and those working in home construction businesses who have been a victim of theft or a break and enter, to report to the police”, says Sgt. Nick Wilsher of the Calgary Police Service Crime Prevention Team.
“The items being stolen in these incidents may indicate home entrances have been left unlocked, making it easier for thieves to help themselves. We are reminding citizens to ensure their residences are secure and for those working in these residences to remain vigilant to help prevent crime”, added Sgt. Wilsher.
CPS offered several tips for new residents to help keep their homes safe, which includes installing security or doorbell cameras, alarm systems and exterior motion lights.
Police suggested that home owners should establish a 9pm routine by closing overhead garage doors and any garage windows; locking any doors leading to or from the garage, especially if they lead directly into the house; closing and locking all windows and turning on an exterior light.
Other tips includes: close your blinds to prevent people from looking into your home; photograph your valuables and record any serial numbers; consider using tracking devices for your vehicles and other valuables; make friends with your neighbors.
For home construction employees or contractors CPS advices knowing the site and those working on it. Question people visiting the site; get a good description of the people you don’t recognize on and around the site; film anything suspicious and report it. Also, liaise between sites and take note of trends.
Police are asking anyone with information about break and enter and theft-related incidents occurring in new communities to call 403-266-1234 or drop anonymous tips on Crime Stoppers.
