A man who has been on the run and was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for murder has been arrested in the United States.
Joseph Chlala, 23, was arrested in Akwesasne, New York state on Monday, August. 5, 2024 by Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, says Edmonton Police. “The Ontario Provincial Police subsequently took custody of Chlala after he was deported from the United States”, says the Edmonton Police News Release.
Chlala was wanted in connection to a homicide that happened last year in south west Edmonton. “On Monday, June 12, 2023, at approximately 6:30pm, police responded to reports of an injured male in an alley in the area of Allard Boulevard SW and Arthurs Crescent SW in Edmonton.”
Police reportedly found 21-year-old Osama Ali dead from gunshot wounds. After an autopsy, his death was deemed a homicide.
“On September 12, 2023, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) homicide detectives requested a Canada-wide warrant for 23-year-old Joseph Chlala for second degree murder in relation to the murder of Mr. Ali.”
According to Calgary Police Service (CPS), he is the same man who was wanted, along with two others for the murder of 32-year-old Christian Navos of Edmonton, Alberta in 2020.
Then, he was charged with first degree murder, but he later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. CPS reportedly issued an arrest warrant when he removed his tracking bracelet and refused to show up for sentencing.
The Edmonton Police Service said it partnered with the Bolo Program in an effort to locate Canada’s most wanted suspects, including Chlala.
