Somali’s government announced on Sunday a ban on TikTok and Telegram and online betting app, 1XBet, over claims that were being used by “terrorists” to spread propaganda.

In a statement, the ministry of communications and technology ordered internet service providers to comply with the ban by August 24 or face legal action.

“In a bid to accelerate the war and elimination of the terrorists who have shed the blood of the Somali people, the minister of communication and technology instructs companies that provide internet services to suspend TikTok, Telegram and 1XBet which terrorists and immoral groups use to spread constant horrific images and misinformation to the public”, said Minister Jama Hassan Khalif.

The Somali army has been engaged in an offensive with the Al-Qaeda affiliated group, Al-Shabad since August 2022, with support from the local militia and African Union troops and American air strikes.

The ban comes days after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud vowed to rid the country of the Al-Shabad in the next five months.
