Heat Warnings Issued for Calgary, Southern Alberta

Environment Canada says this will be a prolonged heat event, lasting into early next week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a heat warning for Calgary and parts of Southern Alberta. The warning was issued on Friday, July 21.

ECCC says “temperature reaching 29 degrees Celsius or warmer combined with overnight lows near 14 degrees Celsius are expected.” “This will be a prolonged heat event, lasting into early next week”, said weather statement.

The agency issues heat warning when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose am elevated risk of heat illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Residents and visitors are warned to “consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day and take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.”

ECCC also advice that those in the affected regions should stay hydrated and stay off alcohol and caffeinated beverages. “Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time”, said the statement.

Most importantly, the agency asked individuals who are likely to experience severe effects, like children, infants, seniors and people with underlying health conditions, to be closely monitored.
