Environment Canada has issued a week-long excessive heat warning for Calgary, and much of Alberta, saying it could set record temperatures for this time of the year.

According to the alert, “for the next 8 to 10 days, daytime highs will be between 28 and 36 degrees Celsius and overnight lows will range from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius.”

Environment Canada says the heat warning is likely to be expanded going forward. The agency advises residents and visitors to consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day and take frequent breaks from the heat.

Spend as much time as you can in cooled indoor spaces, says Environment Canada. Stay hydrated and avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Ensure children and pets are not locked in vehicles for a long period of time.

The heat alert is in place for most of Alberta and will reportedly begin on Tuesday.

The government agency urges Albertans to monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness.

“Adults, pregnant women, children, people with pre-existing medical or mental health conditions, people who live alone and people with no access to indoor cooling are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses”, said Environment Canada.

If you experience any symptoms related to heat stroke, seek immediate medical attention.
