The city of Calgary has offered to help the wildfire evacuees from the Northwest Territories by providing help centers across the province.

“We are helping accommodate residents of the Northwest Territories who have been evacuated due to wildfires”, said City of Calgary on X formerly known as Twitter. “Our Calgary Emergency Management Agency has activated the Municipal Emergency Plan which allows us to accept and accommodate displaced residents affected by the fires.”

The city said they are committed to helping as many as 5,000 people find shelter and additional supports. “A receptions centre at the Calgary International Airport has been opened and for those who have driven to Calgary, there will be a reception centre at the Westin Calgary Air after 2 p.m.” said the City of Calgary.

The provincial government says 10 personnel have been “discharged as an incident management team from Canada Task Force 2 (an all-hazards disaster response team) to assist with emergency response, incident management and urban search and rescue.

Officials says reception centres will include emotional and wellness support teams. Hotels across the province are also providing accommodation for evacuees.

Reports by CTV News Calgary says Calgary pet charity Parachutes for Pets is gathering supplies for animals and has reached out to boarding kennels to see whether some can offer space.
