Russia has taken over the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council for the month. Each of the council’s 15 members takes up the presidency for a month, on a rotating pattern alphabetically.

Despite all efforts from Ukraine to block this, the United States said it could not prevent Russia – one of five permanent members – from taking control, reports BBC.

According to BBC reports, in a press briefing last week, the White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said,  “Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and no feasible international legal pathway exists to change that reality.”

Miniter Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, has described Russia taking up presidency of the council on April as “the world’s Worst April Fool’s joke.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is entering its second year and it was started the last time Russia had presidency of the council.

Kuleba said “Russia has usurped its seat; it’s waging a colonial war; its leader is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for kidnapping children. The world can’t be a safe place with Russia at UNSC.”

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin last month, which means the Security Council is being led by an accused war criminal.

The 15-nation Security Council is the U.N.’s most powerful organ. Five nations which includes Russia, UK, US, France and China are permanently represented on the council.
