U.S President Joe Biden will be making an official visit to Canada between March 23 and March 24 for talks with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and an address to Parliament.
This will be the President’s first visit to Canada since assuming office in January 2021. The White House said “President Biden will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the U. S. -Canada partnership and promote our shared security, shared prosperity, and shared values.”
The white House said First Lady Dr. Jill Biden would accompany the President to Ottawa.
Recently, a suspected Chinese spy balloon that traversed the U.S and Canadian borders were shot down by US fighter jets. This will be a part of the topics of discussion, as protecting the North American airspace is important according to Prime Minister Trudeau.
The White House said the discussion would involve “modernizing the North American Aerospace Defense Command.”
According to the statement released by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the leaders would also be discussing support for Ukraine, Climate change, the opioid crisis, the Canada United States Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the ongoing instability in Haiti, amongst others.
“As we face uncertainty, we will continue working together as we defend our continent and our shared values, create more opportunities for people and businesses on both sides of the border, and build strong economies as reliable suppliers as we move towards a net-zero world”, said Prime Minister Trudeau in a statement.
Although this will be Biden’s first official visit to Canada since becoming president, Biden and Trudeau have met several times since taking office, most recently during a North American Leaders Summit in Mexico City in January.
“I look forward to welcoming President Biden to Canada”, said Trudeau.
