The Super Falcons on Thursday defeated co-host Australia 3-2 at the Brisbane Stadium. The Nigerian women team bagged their first FIFA Women’s World Cup win, beating the co-host Australia to move to top of Group B with four points from two games.
The Super Falcons are the first African team to win a game at this edition and also secured their fifth victory overall in the Women’s World Cup history. In their opening match at the World Cup, the Falcons displayed defensive dexterity, including goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie’s @nnadozie_chiamaka iconic penalty save, from Canada’s Sinclair.
Nigeria is ahead of Canada, which sits in second position and Australia in third position. The Republic of Ireland is in fourth position with no points. The Falcons will face Ireland in their last group game next Monday.
Meanwhile, Asisat Oshoala @asisat_oshoala made history as the first Nigerian to score in three consecutive Women’s World Cups after netting in the third goal against Australia. Oshoala was only introduced in the 64th minute due to passing a late fitness test.
Uchenna Kanu @uchenna_kanu_19 scored the first goal while Osinachi Ohale @osinachiohale scored the second goal for the Super Falcons.
Congratulations to the Super Falcons @ng_superfalcons
