Super Falcon’s five-time African Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, says she is approaching the every game at the 2023 Women’s World Cup with a composed mindset.

“When I step foot on the pitch, I don’t really think about the crowd any longer”, she told BBC. “Some people say they get nervous when the crowd is too much, but for me, it is different. I am just out there to do my job, I’m about my business.”

“This is top level football, you have to ask yourself questions. Even if you win the game, you have to ask yourself questions like ‘Ok, maybe I could be better…” she said. Oshoala has an ardent fan base across Africa and she acknowledges her responsibility as an “icon” who has role to inspire young adults who look up to her.

Oshoala is one of the most celebrated African Female Footballers of all time and is the first African Woman nominated for the Ballon d’Or. “There ae a whole lot of kids out there in Africa who actually look up to me, they tell me ‘you’re my icon, you’re my idol’ and all of that. So I just keep doing what I’m doing”, she added.

“That’s why I always say when I play games, I just want to have fun. I want to score goals. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the end.”

The Super Falcons recorded a draw against Canada in the opening game of the Women’s World Cup and are optimistic of their match against co-host Australia on July 27.
