Nigerians fought hard against Canada on Friday as Chiamaka Nnadozie denies Christine Sinclair to a score a goal in the 50th minute. The match ended with a scoreless draw.
The Super Falcons put up a heroic performance and earned a point in Melbourne despite finishing the game with a player less. The 40th ranked group in the tournament by FIFA finished the game with 10 players after Deborah Abiodun was shown a red card six minutes into stopping time for a tackle with Ashley Lawrence.
As both teams look for the go-ahead goal, Sinclair appealed for a penalty in the 47th minute when she was clipped by Francisca Ordega in the box and went down. The world’s all-time leading international scorer aimed for the corner, but was denied by Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie who made a one-handed save.
It was a good penalty attempt, but was a superb save, which led to the big moment in Melbourne. The goalless draw gives the World Cup co-hosts Australia the advantage, leaving them two points clear at the top of Group B after defeating Ireland on Thursday.
Canada will take on Ireland on July 26. Meanwhile, Nigeria will take on Australia the following day.
