The City of Calgary has started a $6 million affordable housing program for indigenous people of Calgary. The funding is part of the Indigenous Affordable Housing Funding Program (IAHFP).
The IAHFP, a one-time funding program is “designed and delivered for indigenous people, by indigenous people”, says a Monday news release. The funding aims to increase the supply of affordable housing for indigenous people in Calgary.
According to Mayor Jyoti Gondek “nearly a third of the people experiencing homelessness in our city are indigenous, this fund is critically needed and will go a long way in providing culturally appropriate housing options.”
“One of the most important investments we can make for Calgary’s future is in affordable housing,” said Gondek. The city says the funding will increase the supply of units owned and operated for indigenous housing providers and increase the capacity of indigenous Governments and/or not for profit organizations to provide affordable housing.
Applications for the IAHFP will be accepted starting on National Truth and Reconciliation Day (Sept. 30) until Nov. 30. The city will hold information sessions for those interested. Successful applicants will be notified early next year.
