Dehlia Victoria Umunna is a Clinical Professor of Law and Deputy Director of the Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) at Harvard Law School.

Nationally, Professor Umunna is a renowned expert on criminal law, criminal defense and theory, mass incarceration, and race issues. She was born in London, England, in 1973 to a Nigerian father and a Sierra Leonean mother and she grew up in Nigeria.

After graduating law school, Prof. Umunna joined the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where she represented hundreds of destitute juveniles and adults. In 2007, she joined Harvard Law School as a Clinical Instructor at HLS’s Criminal Justice Institute (CJI).

The 49-year-old was the first Nigerian to be appointed Professor in Harvard School of Law.

Speaking on her appointment, Dean of Harvard Law School at the time, Martha Minow said “Dehlia’s students revere her, her colleagues at HLS and nationally look to her as an exemplary advocate, teacher, and mentor.”

Professor Dehlia Umunna is truly worthy of emulation.
