Angelique Kidjo is a Beninese-French singer-songwriter, actress and activist born July 14, 1960 into a family of performing artists. She was born in Ouidah, a coastal town in Benin.

@angeliquekidjo is well known for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos. Kidjo’s music is a blend of traditional African rhythms and contemporary styles, including funk, jazz, and Latin music. She has released numerous albums throughout her career, including “Logozo,” “Fifa,” “Black Ivory Soul,” and “Oyo.”

Kidjo has collaborated with a number of high-profile musicians, including Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, and Alicia Keys. She has also performed at many major music festivals, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Glastonbury Festival.

In 2007, Time Magazine described her as “Africa’s Premier Diva.” On September 15, 2021, she was included in Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

In 2015, Kidjo won her third Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for her album “Sings,” which featured her interpretations of classic songs by artists such as Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba. She continues to be a prominent voice in African music and culture, and an inspiration to many around the world.

In addition to her musical accomplishments, Kidjo is also known for her advocacy work on behalf of girls’ education and other humanitarian causes. She has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, traveling many countries in Africa for advocacy.

Kidjo founded the Batonga Foundation, which empowers some of the most vulnerable and hardest to reach young women and girls in Benin with the knowledge and skills they need to drive change in their lives and in the community.

Amongst her many accolades, she was described as Africa’s Greatest Living Diva by National Public Radio (NPR) in America, March 2013. She won a Crystal Award given by the World Economic Forum of Davos in Switzerland, 2015.

She is also a recipient of the 2023 Polar Music Prize, considered the most prestigious Music Prize in the world.
