Police Renew Search for Leads in 2021 Southwest Calgary Gang Homicide

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has renewed its search for leads in relations to a May 2021 Southwest Calgary gang homicide.

According to CPS news release, Gurkeert Singh Kalkat, a.k.a Gary Kalkat of Calgary and Surrey B.C. was found deceased in his vehicle on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at approximately 5:30pm, in an alley near the 18000 block of 26 Avenue S.W.

Police said they believe Kalkat’s death was “one of many targeted, pre-planned and deliberate incidents directly related to the previous and ongoing gang conflict occurring throughout the lower mainland in British Columbia. The victim’s brother was also murdered on Thursady, May 13, 2021 in Burnaby, B.C. outside of a busy restaurant.”

“Several years have passed since the homicide of Kalkat, and given this is believed to be a gang-related incident, we know allegiances and loyalties to various organized crime groups can change over time, so we are once again asking the public to come forward with tips or information that could further the investigation”, police said in the News Release.

CPS said one key piece of evidence they have not been able to locate is the getaway vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene. Pictures and a description of a blue, four-door Subaru Impreza were share at the time.

Now, investigators believe that vehicle could also be a Subaru Legacy. “Immediately following the incident, the Subaru was believed to have travelled in the Marda Loop area. From the scene, the vehicle travelled west on 32 Avenue S.W., then south on 22 Street S.W., to 33 Avenue S.W., and north to Crownchild Trail S.W.”
