NiDCOM Rescues 17 Nigerian Girls Trafficked to Ghana

Seventeen young Nigerian girls trafficked to Ghana have been rescued by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). Also, five suspected traffickers were arrested.

In a statement on Sunday, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM Director of the Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, said this latest rescue operation brought 130 girls repatriated back to Nigeria from Ghana alone since July 2024.

“This was sequel to the combined and coordinated efforts of the Ghanaian Anti-Human Trafficking Police, Nigerians on Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Ghana, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra,” the statement read.

The rescued women were between the ages of 18 to 29, and native of various Nigerian states including Anambra, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Imo, Edo and Ebonyi. The statement said they were lured to Ghanaunder false promises of employment, but were forced into “exploitative situations and bound by an oath of secrecy.”

Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM ), Abike Dabiri-Erewa expressed her gratitude to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu (CON), for her support in facilitating the safe return of the young girls to the country.

She also commended the efforts of the Board of Trustees Chairman of NIDO Ghana, Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, and the Ghanaian Anti-Human Trafficking Police Unit in ensuring justice for the victims.
Dabiri-Erewa reiterated, “NiDCOM’s commitment to protecting Nigerians in the diaspora under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which gave priority to combating human trafficking and safeguarding the rights of Nigerian citizens at home and in the diaspora.”
