Hundreds of visitors of the Banff National Park have all been helped off the mountain on Tuesday after they were all stranded on the Sulphur Mountain due to power outage.
According to reports by the Canadian press, helicopters were being called in to help people to the bottom of the mountain. Visitors who were stuck at the gondola cabins were helped down on Monday evening, while those stuck on the lift remained at the summit of Sulphur Mountain at the Above Banff Interpretive center, Mark Hendrikse, a spokesperson with Pursuit, the company that runs the operation in the mountain town told CBC.
Some of the visitors chose to hike down the mountain while others stayed behind. Pursuit says the power outage shut was caused by a lightning storm on Monday evening.
The Gondola was reportedly reopened at 4 p.m on Tuesday, said Pursuit’s website. The Canadian Press reports that Emma Badgery, a communications officer from the Banff field unit said “visitors were safely returned to the gondola base.”
