The fire ban in Alberta is about to end in some areas as more evacuees are allowed to return home. Provincial officials says the fire ban across Alberta will change to a fire restriction with effect from 10am on Friday.
Accordingly, wood campfires will now be allowed in designated campgrounds and on private property. On Thursday afternoon, Alberta Wildfire was counting 55 wildfires in protected forest areas, including 16 which were considered out of control, reports CTV News.
This year, Alberta Wildfire has recorded over 500 wildfires with over a million hectares of land burned. The recent humidity and cooler weather helped considerably in fighting the wildfires, hence the decision to ease the ban.
Under the new restrictions, all outdoor wood fires are still banned on public lands and some camping areas. Also, the ban still remains in effect in Fort McMurray, High Level Forest areas as well as Yellowhead County.
Report says the number of evacuation orders have dropped to seven, and over 5,300 Albertans still remain under the evacuation orders.
