China has banned its central government officials from using Apple’s iPhones, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
The report says staff were directives by their superiors in workplace chats groups or meetings, in recent weeks. However, the full scope of the prohibition remains rather unclear.
The ban comes ahead of Apple’s launch of its latest range of devices, the iPhone 15 series, in less than a week. Reports says this could hinder iPhone sales in China and influence Apple’s overall financial performance. China is a significant market for Apple after the United States.
China has been encouraging the use of Chinese brands within the country in a bid to reduce reliance on foreign technologies. However, reports says this could be in retaliation to similar technology restrictions places on Chinese tech firms by Western countries.
In the United States, restrictions were placed on ByteDance app TikTok, from devices in some states like Montana, Texas, Ohio, Georgia and New Jersey over concerns that the Chinese government could have access to personal data through the app.
