The French government has ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation that are above European Union standards for exposure.

The French government’s Agency of National Frequencies (ANFR) said that agents would be sent to French Apple stores to make sure that iPhone 12 series models are not sold. The agency says if Apple cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country.

France’s digital minister, Jean-Noel Barrot said the iPhone 12’s radiation levels are still “significantly lower” than levels that scientific studies consider could harm users and Apple can bring the smartphone model back into compliance with “a simple update.”

However, Apple has disputed the ANFR’s findings, saying it has sent the agency multiple lab results and that the devices meet the international radiation guidelines.

The agency says it tested 141 phone models, including the iPhone 12 and found that the device’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was above what is legally allowed. The ANFR requires the SAR of devices to be checked in two different ways a phone is used, says the report.

The phone is checked for when it is placed in the pocket or held and the SAR limit for this is four watts per kilogram, but iPhone 12’s “membre” SAR was reportedly 5.74 watts per kilogram, which is higher than the limit.

The phone passed a separate test for when it is placed jacket or a bag, said the agency. The news first broke out the same day the iPhone 15 was released.

In an interview with French media outlet, France Info, Barrot said “Apple is expected to respond within two weeks. If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation.”

“The rule is the rule for everyone” he added. Apple has said that it is contesting the agency’s review and will continue to show that the phones are compliant.
