High school students from across six school districts compete in the eighth annual welding rodeo.

Dozens of Calgary students put their skills to test in the eighth annual Calgary High School Welding Rodeo, which took place at the international Brotherhood of Boilermakers Canada Lodge 146.

According to Global News, about 50 students were in attendance, all vying to catch the attention of industry experts, while showcasing their skills in welding, metal fabrication, problem solving and leadership.

The theme for this year was Star Wars. Students, who are in grades 10-12 completed a fabrication project, a scrap metal sculpture and a student from each group completed a mock welder qualification test.

The purpose of the competition is to embolden creativity and nurture teamwork for students, as well as encourage competition in technology and trade occupations.

Students in Career and Technology Studies (CTS) from the Calgary Catholic School District, Calgary Board of Education, Rocky View School District, Foothills School Division, Golden Hills School, Division and Conseil Scolaire FrancoSud took part in the timed challenge.
