Sean Strickland @strickland_mma defeated Israel Adesanya @stylebender to become the new UFC middleweight champion of the world at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.
All three judges scored the fight 49-46 in favor of Strickland, the man ranked fifth in the middleweight division. Strickland, 31, dropped Adesanya, 34, sending him spinning to the canvas before seeking a finish.
Speaking in the Octagon after the fight, Strickland said “Am I dreaming? Am I going to wake up? Somebody hit me. Oh my God guys. Literally never in a million years did I thought I would be here.”
This is Adesanya’s third loss bringing his record to 24-3 while Strickland improves to 28-5.
In his post-fight conference, Adesanya said “I had a different plan for this, but life goes curveballs at you… right now, I lost tonight to the better man on the night and I just want to go be with people who care about me, my team, they’re waiting for me… but I will leave you in the capable hands of a man who is much smarter than me, I will admit this on worldwide national media.”
“…I wanna go chill, have some breakfast, be with my family, so yeah until next time”, he added.
