Chicago Police have arrested four suspects in the shooting of a 24-year-old off-duty officer who was killed on Saturday morning.
Report says the officer, Areanah Preston, was killed from her mother’s doorstep after finishing a night patrol. The four “persons of interest” – two males and two females – were arrested after an hours-long standoff with police in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, a source said.
Officers had found Preston lying outside her home, with multiple gunshot wounds, and she was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.
According to Fox News Digital, charges were pending review by the state’s attorney’s office, which has 48 hours to file charges or release the suspects. Report says a fifth person, a 19-year-old male was taken into custody somewhere else.
Preston had just earned her master’s degree in child and family law from Loyola University Chicago, and was supposed to graduate this coming Saturday. Flags outside the 5th District police station have been flown at half-mast as officers mourn Preston’s death.
A CPD spokesperson said her death is officially being considered in-the-line-of-duty and plans are underway for her funeral.
