Over 100 wedding guests have reportedly drowned at Egbu village, in the Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State. The incident occurred on June 12, 2023
The boat conveying about 250 passengers travelling from Kwara state to Niger State had capsized after it crashed into a tree while they were returning from a wedding ceremony. Amongst the deceased in the unfortunate incident is a father and his four children.
The spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Ajayi Okansanmi who confirmed the incident said the names of the survivors will be published soon. Many are still missing as search and rescue efforts continue.
According to the Kwara State officials, the boat, which was overloaded, was overtaken by a river wave, causing it to crash into a tree and throw passengers into the river. The boat was conveying the guests after the wedding to Ebu Village and Dzakan village, all in Patigi Local Government Area.
Speaking to AFP by telephone, SP Okansanmi said “so far we have 103 people dead and over 100 rescued from the boat accident. Search and rescue is still ongoing, meaning the toll is likely to rise.”
