Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen and Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala have been named in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) player of the year final three-man list for the men and women categories, respectively.
On Thursday, CAF made the announcement for the awards, which will be held in Morocco on Monday.
Osimhen was influential in Napoli’s Scudetto success last season, winning the Golden Boot after scoring 26 goals. The 24-year-old finished as a top scorer in the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier. He is considered one of the best strikers in the world and in the Serie A as well as one of the best centre-forwards in European football.
Osimhen will contend with Ashraf Hakimi of Morocco and Mohammed Salah of Egypt.
For the women’s category, Oshoala, who is the reigning African Women’s Player of the year, will battle South Africa’s Bayana Bayana player, Thembi Klagtlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda.
The 28-year-old Barcelona Femeni star is a five-time winner of the, Women’s Footballer of the Year category. She scored 21 goals in just 28 games to lead FC Barcelona to the 2022/23 Spanish League and was the club’s top scorer with 27 goals in all competitions. Oshoala made history in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as the first Nigerian and first African female player to score at three different editions of the FIFA World Cup.
Other Nigerians in the category are Deborah Abiodun, in the Young Player of the Year (Women) category and Chiamaka Nnadozie for the Goalkeeper of the Year (Women) category.
Chiamaka Nnadozie will be contending with Andile Dlamini of South Africa and Khadija Er-Rmichi of Morocco. Meanwhile, Deborah Abiodun will battle Comfort Yeboah of Ghana and Nesryne El Chad of Morocco.
The Award ceremony will take place on 11 December 2023, in Marrakech, Morocco.
