Nigeria to Swear in Bola Tinubu as New President

The inauguration will be hosted at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

The next president of Africa’s largest democracy, Nigeria, will be sworn in today at the Eagle Square in the country’s capital city, Abuja.

The former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, 71, will be serving as Nigeria’s President for the next four years.

Last minute preparations have been made for President Muhammadu Buhari’s handover to the President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Eagle Square has been beautifully decorated with the green-white-green colors of the nation.

There is already substantial security at the venue, where operatives of the joint security team including the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Army and other paramilitary agencies are all working together in preparation for the historic moment.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola is expected to administer the oath of office on President-Elect Tinubu and Vice-President Elect Shettima in the presence of outgoing President Buhari and outgoing Vice-president Osinbajo.

Ahead of the inauguration, Tinubu had received transition documents from Buhari, just as the President-Elect and his deputy were conferred the national honors of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) and Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON) respectively.

Tinubu won February’s election with a promise of renewed hope, but he faces tough socio-economic and security challenges. As he takes over from two-term president Muhammadu Buhari, over 200 million Nigerians hope he will be able to invigorate Nigeria’s economy, with a thoughtful approach.
