Bola Tinubu has been officially sworn in as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Kashim Shettima was also sworn in as the Vice President of Nigeria.
The Oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kayode Ariwoola, on Monday, May 29.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on March 1, declared Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), as the winner of the February 25, general presidential election. He polled a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He also scored over 25 per cent of the votes in over 25 states.
Born March 29, 1952, President Bola Tinubu was the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and the senator for Lagos West in the Third Republic. Tinubu’s political career began in 1991, when he joined the Social Democratic Party.
In 1993, after the results of the June 12 presidential elections were annulled, Tinubu became a founding member of the Pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition, a group which mobilized support for the restoration of democracy and recognition of Moshood Abiola as winner of the June 12 election.
Tinubu made his formal announcement of candidacy for president on January 10, 2022. On June 8, 2022, he won the party convention vote of the ruling APC, scoring 1, 271, to defeat Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Tinubu is an astute politician who has espoused social justice, liberty and recognition of fundamental human rights.
