Meta announced its open-source AI model, Llama 2, its first large language model that is free for all. Llama, according to Meta, is free for research and commercial use.

The open-source AI model is part of Meta’s and Microsoft’s initiative to expand their “longstanding partnership” as the “preferred partner for Llama 2.” According to the company, they will be “opening access to Llama 2 with the support of a broad set of companies and people across tech, academia and policy who also believe in open innovation approach to today’s AI technologies.”

Meta announced the move as part of Microsoft’s Inspire event, stating its support for Azure and Windows. Meta believes that an open approach can benefit everyone. “Giving businesses, startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers access to tools developed at a scale that would be challenging to build themselves, backed by computing power they might not otherwise access, will open up a world of opportunities for them to experiment, innovate in exciting ways, and ultimately benefit from economically and socially”, said Meta in a press release.

In opening up Llama 2, Meta says it wants to promote transparency and access. The company said the Llama 2 model has been “red-teamed”, meaning it has been tested for safety “through internal and external efforts.”

However, MIT Technology Review has noted that Meta is not releasing information about the data set that it used to train Llama 2. The report says Meta cannot “guarantee that it didn’t include copyrighted works or personal data.”
