World No. 1 Iga Swiatek @iga.swiatek held her recent grip against unseeded Karolina Muchova @karolinamuchova to win her third French Open title in four years in two hours and 46 minutes.
The final score was 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Swiatek, 22, is the first woman to defend the title since Justine Henin in 2007 and youngest since Monica Seles to win consecutive titles at Roland Garros.
Swiatek took the first three games in about ten minutes, but it soon became a fight, with Muchova taking the fourth after pulling Swiatek off the baseline. As the game went on, there were too many unforced errors.
Muchova, 26, showed extraordinary resolve, fighting back from a set and was able to move within two service holds of a first major title. The two swapped break points until the ninth game when Swiatek held to lead 5-4 as Muchova drove two weak forehands into the net.
“It wasn’t an easy match. It was a pretty intense last few weeks”, said Swiatek. Muchova broke down in tears as she received her runners-up trophy. Speaking on the game, she said “This is incredible, thank you everyone. It’s been an amazing three weeks in Paris for me and my team.”
“This was close but yet so far. This happens when you play one of the best. Iga, I want to congratulate you again and you team.”
