Avalanche Canada has extended the special avalanche warning for areas west of Calgary through to Sunday, March 10.
The warning, which was originally issued on Feb. 29, affects Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks and Kananaskis Country. According to Avalanche Canada, weak layers established early last month are now buried anywhere from 40 to 100 centimeters deep and an avalanche could be easily triggered.
“These persistent weak layers remain very active and easy to trigger, and any avalanche triggered on them will be large enough to injure or even kill a person. The sun’s effect will also make natural and human-triggered avalanches likely over the weekend”, said Avalanche Canada.
Avalanche Canada stressed the importance of maintaining “careful, cautious decision making during this time.” It warns people to avoid areas with overhead hazard and stick to smaller, lower angle slopes with low consequences.
“The new snow and blue skies will be tempting, but recreationists should be careful not to let this influence decisions”, said Avalanche Canada.
