Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has warned his players not to get carried away following the 1-0 win against Cote d’Ivoire in the 2023 African Cup of Nations on Thursday.
“Now is not the time to celebrate, I have told the players. We eat properly, rest well and start preparation for the next game against Guinea Bissau. The game on Monday is very important and that is what we should focus on now”, said Peseiro.
“We will only celebrate when we win the tournament. Now it’s time to work, work and work.”
The victory against the Ivorians takes the Super Eagles to four points, joint-top with Equatorial Guinea.
Captain William Troost-Ekong scored the winning goal from the penalty spot after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the opposition box.
Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen, stated that the Eagles had a game plan that they followed to secure the win. He said “This game against Ivory Coast was a big statement game for us, we needed to win and make a statement in a competition like the AFCON.”
“Ivory Coast have a lot of quality players in the squad so I think we deserved this win. We have also got a lot of talented players that can do the damage, we were focused from start of the game to the end.”
He added “we had a game plan which we carried to the pitch, and I am happy we executed it well and it worked out for us. We are going for the next game now, we know what we need to do to qualify and we are ready for them.”
