The host nation of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire, began the tournament with a 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau.
The hosts were ahead within the first five minutes into the game, as Seko Fofana provided an excellent beginning for the Elephants in the Group A at the opening match at Alassane Ouattara stadium, Abidjan.
However, Jean-Philippe Krasso netted in the second goal in the 58th minute. Cote d’Ivoire play their second Group A game against Nigeria at Alassane Ouattara Stadium on January 18.
The team who had several players missing due to injury, is aiming for their third continental triumph following victories in 1992 and 2015.
The hosts got an early start when Fofana received a pass from Franck Kessie, maneuvering past defenders, and driving a powerful right-footed shot inside the right-hand post from 20 yards. Guinea Bissau settled into the contest and created a few chances for themselves.
In the first half, Guinea Bissau forward, Mama Balde missed a major opportunity in the first half, misfiring his shot when positioned in the box, and a sharp save by Ivorian keeper, Yahia Fofana.
Nigeria is set to face Equatorial Guinea at 14:00 GMT on Sunday in the second Group A game. Egypt vs Ghana in the Group B will also take place later in the day.
