Four former members of Canada’s 2018 World Juniors hockey team, who now play in the National Hockey League (NHL) face sexual assault charges. New Jersey Devils players Micheal McLeod and Cal Foote, Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers’ Carter Hart are all involved in the case.
Their lawyers confirmed the charges in a public statement.
A fifth member of the team, Alex Formenton, showed up at the London Police Service Headquarters and surrendered to the police.
Mcleod’s lawyers David Humphrey and Seth Weinstein in a Tuesday statement said their client will be “pleading not guilty and will vigorously defend the case.” Also, Savard Foy LLP, the firm representing Carter Hart said in a statement posted on X “We act for Carter Hart and confirm he has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He is innocent and will provide a full response to this false allegation in the proper forum, a court of law. Until then, we have no comment.”
Louis p. Strezos and Kaleigh Davidson, the lawyers for Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube, said in a statement “he will plead not guilty and maintains his innocence. He will defend the allegations in court.”
The Globe and Mail, citing two sources with knowledge of the investigation, reported that the charges are related to an incident at the Delta Armouries hotel, in which a woman identified in court documents as E.M. told the police she was sexually assaulted by as many as eight hockey players over several hours.
The report says “the alleged attack occurred in the early morning hours after the Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf on June 18, 2018. At the event, the junior hockey team was honored for winning the gold medal at the world junior championships several months earlier.”
The London police is expected to release more details on the incident on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024.
