Calgary Police Service (CPS) have charged two men with several counts of robbery with a firearm after they were believed to be targeting victims who were seen leaving local casinos.

According to the police, “On Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, at approximately 1:40am., the victim returned to his residence in southwest Calgary after a night spent at ACE Airport Casino, located at 40 Aero Cres. N.E.”

Police believes that as the victim exited his vehicle to enter his residence, two unknown men approached him, pushed him to the ground and threatened him with a firearm and demanded the victim’s belongings. Afterwards, they fled in a black sedan with an undisclosed amount of money.

Two similar robberies also happened on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024 in the early morning hours. Again, the victims had departed the ACE Airport Casino and were then followed home by the suspects.

The victims were also threatened with firearms and their belongings and money were demanded. In both cases, the suspects obtained money and fled in a black sedan, says CPS.

Following investigations by the police, the suspects were apprehended on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024, at around 4:15am at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino, located at 3777 Grey Eagle Dr. S.W.

Police have now charged Tyler Gerald Chabot, 31 of Calgary, with four counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of committing an offence while disguised and possession of crack cocaine.

Also, Anthony Richard Vander Heide, 30 of Calgary, was charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm.

Both men will appear in court today, Friday, August 9, 2024.

“This investigation resulted in the apprehension of two dangerous men who targeted unsuspecting victims at their homes following an enjoyable night out. Thanks to our investigators who intervened in this criminal behaviour, further victimization was prevented. As always, we are reminding Calgarians to stay vigilant, be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to police”, said Acting Staff Sgt. Cory Tait.

Police is asking anyone with information about these or similar incidents to call 403 266 1234 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
