The Calgary Stampede will continue as planned despite the water restrictions in the city.

The city expects that the repairs will go on for the next three to five weeks, overlapping with the annual Calgary Stampede. “The show will go on”, said Mayor Jyoti Gondek on Monday afternoon. “The summer will carry forward”, said Mayor Gondek.

The water main break was first uncovered on June 5, and after more investigation five more areas in need of repairs was discovered. This means that Calgarians will have to continue following the water restrictions for few more weeks.

During the Monday update, Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) acting chief Coby Duerr said “We have been working with the event organizers to make sure they don’t impact our water use during this critical time.”

“Similar to the 2013 floods, the 2024 Stampede won’t be cancelled, it just might look a little different.”

Duerr said officials have reviewed the five-year daily water demand trend during the stampede week and there have been no “significant uptick in demand”. Duerr also noted that some Calgarians leave the city during Stampede and early July produces big storms.

The City of Calgary is currently under stage four outdoor water restrictions. Calgarians are advised to reduce their water usage indoors until all repairs are done.

“It is important the Calgary Stampede moves on”, said Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley. “For a number of reasons, the least of which is not the $282 million of economic impact generated for the province of Alberta during that 10-day festival.”

He added “as such, the show will go on, but it will go on in a very responsible manner.”
