The City of Calgary officials says a timeline for when restrictions on outdoor water use could be lifted will be provided today. The city will also provide an update on indoor water usage as they continue to monitor the stabilization of the water system.
In an update on Monday afternoon, Mayor Jyoti Gondek said, “We’re not at a place yet to lift outdoor water restrictions or fire ban, but we should know more tomorrow morning about how much longer we will need to continue saving water indoors.”
The mayor said crews began stabilizing the water system on Sunday.
“During this stabilization step that we are in, Calgary is at the greatest risk of another break or a major disruption. If we go too fast, this could overstress the system. This could cause leaks or breaks. That’s why we’re being so incredibly cautious and taking things very slowly”, said Mayor Gondek.
“We’re certainly not out of the woods yet”. Gondek added.
The City of Calgary’s general manager of infrastructure services Michael Thompson said the city would assess its data before making a decision. “You will have an update tomorrow about whether we are ready to ease some of those reductions and restrictions, or if more time is needed”, said Thompson.
He added that the officials will focus on easing indoor water saving measures first.
Calgarians used 425 million litres of water on Sunday, the lowest number since the water crisis began, Gondek said in the update.
The city said the live update will begin at 10:30 am on Tuesday, to allow officials gather as much data as possible before presenting the next cause of action.
