The City of Calgary has issued a mandatory restriction on the use of outdoor water for homes and businesses.
The restriction is due to Calgary Drought Conditions, which according to the officials is now in stage 1. The restriction states that “residences and businesses are allowed to use their sprinkler, soaker hose or in-ground sprinkling system during specific days and times based on their address.”
The city said they moved the drought dial to “Very Dry – Stage 1”, due to hot and dry weather conditions. According to Nicole Newton, Calgary’s manager of natural environment and adaptation, the flow on the Elbow River hasn’t been this low since 2000 and the Bow River is the lowest it has been since 1911.
“This is the first time that the City of Calgary has enacted outdoor water restrictions as a result of drought”, said Newton.
Under the stage 1 restriction, people with even number addresses can use their sprinklers for a maximum total of two hours on either Wednesday or Saturday at 4 a.m. – 7 a.m.; or 9 a.m. -11 a.m.; or 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Those with odd number addresses can use their sprinklers for up to a maximum total of two hours on either Thursday or Sunday at 4 a.m. – 7 a.m.; or 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.; or 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
The city says you can use a watering can or a hose with shut-off spray to water gardens, trees and shrubs. You are also allowed to water new sod (planted within 21 days) or lawn seed (planted within 45 days) with a sprinkler or hose.
Water can also be used to fill an outdoor pool, hot tub or wading pool. Also for construction purposes which includes grading, compaction, or dust control.
However, the city says washing of cars with water in the driveway or street is not allowed during the restriction. Do not fill fountains or decorative water features; clean exterior building surface, use water to wash sidewalks, driveways, or walkways; or wash outdoor windows.
An exception is made for businesses as they are allowed to wash vehicles to follow health and safety regulations; wash outdoor surfaces at childcare facilities, restaurants, kennel and animal care facilities; water plants, shrubs and trees for commercial sale.
Businesses that have a license to operate exterior window washing and services and car washes are allowed to operate.
