Viola Davis is an American actress and producer. She was born on August 11, 1965, in St. Matthews, South Carolina. Davis is widely regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished actresses of her generation.

Davis began her acting career in theater, gaining recognition for her performances in stage productions such as “King Hedley II” and “Fences.” She made her film debut in the late 1990s and gradually built a successful career in both film and television.

One of Davis’ breakthrough roles came in the 2008 drama film “Doubt,” for which she received critical acclaim and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She gained further recognition for her role as Aibileen Clark in the 2011 film adaptation of “The Help,” which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

However, it was her portrayal of Rose Maxson in the film adaptation of August Wilson’s play “Fences” (2016) that garnered Davis widespread commendation. She won numerous awards for her performance, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first African-American actress to win an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony Award, often referred to as the “Triple Crown of Acting.”

Davis has been involved in various other notable projects, including the legal drama series “How to Get Away with Murder,” for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She has also appeared in films such as “The Help,” “Suicide Squad,” “Widows,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” the latter earning her another Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Recently, her performances in Widows (2018) and The Woman King (2022) earned her further nominations for the BAFTA Best Actress Award, making her the most-BAFTA-nominated black actress.
