Twitter Threatens Legal Action Against Meta Over Thread App

Twitter have vowed to sue Meta hours after the launch of the Threads App.

In a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zukerberg, which was first reported by news outlet Semafor, Musk Lawyer Alex Spiro accused Meta of “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property” to create Threads.

Mr. Spiro alleged that Meta had hired dozens of former Twitter employees who “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.”

Spiro wrote that “Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.”

Threads went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at 2300 GMT on Wednesday, with a close resemblance to Twitter. In the first few hours of its launch, more than 30 million users had downloaded the Threads App and signed up.

This move by Zuckerberg against Musk will further heighten the rivalry between the two multibillionaires. In his first tweet in a very long time, Zuckerberg posted a Spiderman pointing at Spiderman meme, and this was considered a reference to the similarities between Threads and Twitter.

Responding to a post on Twitter about the legal action, Mr. Musk tweeted “competition is fine, cheating is not.” Meta’s Communications director, Andy Stone, told Semafor that “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee.” He added “that’s just not a thing.”
