Tesla has recalled all 2 million of its cars on US and Canada roads due to issues with its autopilot software system.
Tesla announced the recall on its official website, stating that “Tesla has voluntarily issued recall on certain model year 2012-2023 Model S that are equipped with Autosteer and were produced between October 5, 2012, and December 7, 2023.”
The vehicles involved in the recall include all model year 2016-2023 Model X, all model year 2017-2023 Model 3 and all model year 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles that are equipped with Autosteer and were produced through Dec. 7, 2023.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in a letter to Tesla Inc. said “in certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, and the driver does not maintain responsibility for vehicle operation and is unprepared to intervene as necessary or fails to recognize when Autosteer is canceled or not engaged, there may be an increased risk of a crash.”
Tesla says all affected vehicles will be recalled at no cost to customers and will receive an Over-the-air (OTA) software remedy. “The remedy will incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already existing on affected vehicles to further encourage supervisory responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged”, says Tesla.
The OTA software remedy is expected to begin deploying on or shortly after Dec. 12, 2023. Vehicle owners do not have to schedule a service appointment with Tesla as all cars will receive a free software update.
The NHTSA says it reviewed 956 crashes, where Autopilot was initially alleged to have been in use, then focused on a narrower set of 322 Autopilot-involved crashes, including frontal impacts and impacts from potential inadvertent disengagement of the system.
