The Calgary Police Service’s Traffic section in investigating two separate fatal collisions that occurred yesterday in the Southwest and Northwest areas of the city.
In the first collision, a pedestrian in his 50s was killed after being hit by two separate cars. The man was reportedly walking westbound, crossing Elbow Drive S.W. at the intersection of 61 Avenue S.W., in a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2024 Ford Escape travelling southbound on Elbow Drive S.W.
“The driver of the Ford Escape, a woman in her 80s, pulled over to help the pedestrian. At the same time, another vehicle travelling southbound along Elbow Drive S.W., a 2009 Pontiac Vibe driven by a woman in her 70s, struck the pedestrian”, says CPS.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, but both drivers were uninjured.
Roughly one hour later, at 8pm, Calgary Police said a 2014 Toyota Prius, driven by a man in his 40s, was travelling north on Crowchild Trail N.W. near Fifth Avenue N.W. when it approached a broken-down vehicle in the right lane.
“As the driver of the Toyota exited the vehicle to help the other motorist, the Toyota began to roll backwards. The man attempted to stop the Toyota from rolling and became pinned underneath the vehicle.”
Due to the car rolling, the man suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.
CPS says neither speed, alcohol nor drugs are considered factors in either collision. However, the police is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage to call 403-266-1234 or drop anonymous tips on Crime Stoppers.
