The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is investigating a serious-injury collision that occurred on Deerfoot Trail near 17 Avenue S.E.
According to the CPS news release, “On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at approximately 6:15pm., an Acura, driven by a 20-year-old man, was traveling northbound along Deerfoot Trail S.E., and made a sudden lane change.”
“During the lane change, the Acura side-swiped a Kia, which was being operated by a man in 50s.”
Police say the Kia was deflected off its path of travel, left the roadway, and landed a short distance away on a grassy embankment. Upon landing, the Kia then rolled down the embankment, striking a chain link fence and eventually came to rest on its roof. The driver of the Kia sustained minor injuries.
“The Acura, upon striking the Kia, entered the grassy shoulder and struck a support beam for overhead directional signage. The driver was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.”
Police is currently investigating excessive speed on the part of the Acura, as a factor in the collision. Officers do not believe impairment was a factor in the collision.
CPS Traffic Section is investigating the incident and asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to call 403 – 266 – 1234.
