At the ongoing African championships and Olympics quaifiers in Alexandria, Egypt, four Nigerian wrestlers have joined Odunayo Adekuoroye to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games by winning gold medals.
Odunayo Adekuoroye secured qualification in 2023 after winning a bronze medal in the women’s 57kg at the World Championships in Belgrade.
Blessing Oborududu, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist, secured her place in the 68kg category with a 2-0 victory over Palau’s Uilau I. Tarkong. World Military Champion Hannah Rueben, secured an Olympic spot with a 6-0 victory in the 76kg category over Amy Youin of Cote D’Ivoire.
Esther Kolawole joined the list of Nigerian athletes by securing a victory 10-0 over Cape Verde’s Angelina Rodriguez Miranda. The 53kg African Games Champion, Christiana Ogunsanya, secured her place in the Paris Games with a 10-0 victory over Egyptian Shaimaa Atef Barakat Mohamed.
Meanwhile, Mercy Genesis narrowly missed out on the Olympic qualification in the 50kg category, with a 5-7 defeat to Egyptian Nada Medani Ashour Abdalla Mohamed.
As the five female wrestlers have secured their spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Nigerian male freestyle wrestlers aim to secure Olympic slots in the upcoming matches on Sunday, which is the final day of this window’s qualifiers.
The final Olympic slots will be determined from May 9-12 at the 2024 World Qualification Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey.
