North Carolina lawmakers have voted to ban abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy after the overriding the governor’s veto. The General Assembly successfully overrode the Democratic governor’s veto late Tuesday.
The House completed the second and final part of the override vote after a similar three-fifths majority voted for the override in the Senate. The State Senate voted 30-20 and the House by 72-48 to override the veto.
The measure was vetoed by Governor Cooper over the weekend. According to him, the bill would stand “in the way of progress and turn the clock back 50 years on women’s health.” The bill bans abortion at 12 weeks with exceptions to rape, incest and medical emergencies.
The bill mandates that any abortions taking place after 12 weeks should be done in the hospital, reports BBC. However, the exceptions in the case of rape and incest are until 20 weeks of pregnancy.
After the vote in the North Carolina House on Tuesday, observers in the gallery booed and shouted “shame!”
