A new safe surrender site for babies is now available in Calgary, close to the site where a newborn was found dead in a Bowness dumpster seven years ago.

“Like many Calgarians we were impacted by the death of the infant”, said Lisa Garrisen, director of programs with Children’s Cottage Society (CCS). “We knew we wanted to do something that would provide an alternative for parents if they were in desperate situations.”

The Hope’s Cradle, is the first safe surrender site in Calgary. The site was created in co-ordination with Gems for Gems, a society that empowers and educated to create enduring change and end the cycle of abuse of survivor.

According to CCS, the surrender site is “to ensure that there is a service to the community available for parents who cannot care for a child to safely surrender an infant in a safe and anonymous place. And we are proud to be a host site for a cradle.”

The Hope’s Cradle Safe Surrender Site is located at 1804 Home Road NW.  CCS says the site is available to parents or caregivers who may not be able to provide care to an infant and it is completely anonymous.
