A Calgary kitchen that was linked to daycare E.coli outbreak is allowed to reopen in a limited capacity.
The E.coli outbreak was declared on Sept. 4, for six location of a Calgary daycare and five additional sites that share a central kitchen. According Alberta Health Services (AHS), as of Nov. 21, there were 448 cases linked to the outbreak, including 358 laboratory-confirmed and probable cases.
The outbreak was linked to the central kitchen which has now been cleared to reopen. AHS said that after an inspection of the Fueling Brains Academy (FBA) Centennial kitchen, on Nov. 15 and all violations being corrected, the closure order was rescinded on Nov. 17.
The province said the FBA can now operate “in a limited capacity”. This means the kitchen can only receive and serve food prepared by Meals on Wheels to children in the daycare at that location.
A total of 1, 581 children who were connected to the outbreak have been cleared to return to a daycare facility, says AHS. However, AHS says some individuals who have tested positive for E.coli (STEC) remain excluded from returning to daycare.
A panel set up by the health minister on Sept. 27, to review food safety for kitchens that serve child-care facilities, will make its final recommendations on how to improve food safety fro daycares in the spring.
AHS said there could be an interim report if there are immediate ascertaining ways to improve food safety regulations or procedures.
